Mamoru YAMADA (1894–1966)

 Mamoru Yamada was a pioneering figure in modern Japanese architecture and is recognized as one of the leading modernist architects of the Showa era. After graduating from the Department of Architecture at Tokyo Imperial University, he joined the Ministry of Communications, where he designed numerous telephone exchange buildings and public facilities. His work, characterized by graceful curves and functional elegance, attracted significant attention. In 1964, he became widely known for his designs of the Kyoto Tower and the Nippon Budokan, both noted for their innovative and futuristic forms. In the 1920s, Yamada traveled through Europe and the United States, where he met with major figures of modern architecture such as Le Corbusier and Walter Gropius. These encounters with cutting-edge architectural thought greatly influenced his later philosophy. Following World War II, he established his own practice and undertook numerous projects for Tokai University, including the design of its Shonan Campus, as well as facilities in Kumamoto, Shimizu, and Yoyogi. The Shonan Campus is especially celebrated for its integration with the natural topography and its open design that incorporates light and airflow to enhance the learning environment. Yamada also served as a professor in the Department of Architecture at Tokai University, dedicating himself to the education of future architects. He viewed architecture as a "device that connects people and the environment," and pursued a vision that harmonized functionality with artistic expression. His legacy continues to be held in high esteem today.
